Templates: Research Report Frame

A FRAME is a business outline document – a precursor to the first draft.

A business outline is not an academic outline.  Do not use the standard outlining behaviors, instead do the following.  In the FRAME include,

  • the document’s top heading. For instance, if the document is to be a memo, write the memo heading
  • the introduction. You need to get clear on your direction and scope.  Writing the introduction helps you with that.  Remember CGAB.  At this point, you should have a mostly clear decision on the scope, the direction of your writing.
  • the body point’s headings with placeholder goop (alsjfisjflsjfdl saldfj sildfj sfijolsijdflsjdfljsf). You job is to create the space to write the details.  If you have a group that you expect to write a lot of information, then add lots of goop. If it’s a small section, then include just a little placeholder goop.
  • A business conclusion
  • Works Cited. Get started on this early to ensure accuracy.

Now you have a great start.

As an example, for a research assignment on cultural communication of a country, I created one way to approach the writing.  In this model you can see how you marry research requirements with organization.  Study the organization of this example, and then create your own framework.  Be sure to include the placeholder gobbledygook as it helps you see how much writing you will need to do.
